The Allegheny and Clarion River valleys continue to be lush and green from the abundant summer rains. Summer gardens are a bloom with multiple colors and sounds. Foxburg along the beautiful Allegheny River is a great place to pause between garden moments of work and pleasure. While enjoying a summer respite about town be sure to visit the Red Brick Gallery on Main Street.

The summer season is in full swing as the Red Brick presents a captivating exhibit of beautifully detailed watercolors by botanical painter Donna Edmonds and painter Angela Hardwick in the Upstairs Gallery from Friday, August 15th through Sunday, September 14th.

Donna Edmonds is a botanical artist who works exclusively in watercolor and focuses primarily on Pennsylvania native plants and insects for her subject matter. Botanical art requires special attention to detail in order to render the subject as correctly and precisely as possible. As a life-long gardener and nature lover, it has been a natural transition to botanical art and pollinating insects.

Yellow Trout Lily

Donna’s interest in native Pennsylvania plants is inspired by the many area wildflowers. Included in the current exhibit are such plants as the Bloodroot, Trout Lily (seen above), Blue Flag Iris and many others – all found in the local area and painted from real life specimens. Each painting is accompanied by a description of the plant or insect and its habitat.

Born in London, England, Angela was exposed to all the arts at an early age and was particularly drawn to music and painting.  Eventually, a career in the music business with HarrisonParrott artist management in London found her managing international conductors and much of her free time was taken up singing and touring with the LSO Chorus. Angela’s work as Assistant to the Pittsburgh Symphony’s Music Director, Andre Previn, brought her to Western Pennsylvania, where she met her husband, Charles, a violinist with the Pittsburgh Symphony.

After retiring from the PSO’s management, Angela at last has had the time to indulge her love of painting (self-taught), along with her other passions, gardening and cooking.  Angela has produced a watercolor series including the four seasons of the Frick Cafe and the Frick Greenhouse, which have been on sale in the Frick Museum Gift Shop.  She enjoys commissions to do watercolor paintings of people’s houses and estates.  Much of Angela’s artwork is inspired by regular trips to Europe with her husband.  They live with their three amazing cats in Wexford.

Allegheny RiverStone Center for the Arts established the Red Brick Artist Cooperative in 2011 to provide area artists a suitable venue for the display and viewing of their works, as well as a consignment sales outlet for the members, who all volunteer their time to have the space open to the public. The Gallery’s home is a charming and historic 135 year old building that was once the business office of the Fox family from Philadelphia and the namesake of the Foxburg village. It was attractively restored in 2004 by its current owners, who are also ARCA members, and became known as The Red Brick. The building also serves as the office of the Allegheny RiverStone Center for the Arts, a regional non- profit organization fostering the performing arts in the northern Allegheny River valley and encouraging local artists efforts.

The Red Brick is located at 17 Main Street in “downtown” Foxburg and is open on weekends. Members are local and regional artists who include painters, weavers, photographers, and potters. Store hours are Friday 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Saturday 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM and Sunday 11 AM to 4 PM.  To reach by phone call during open hours call 724-659-0003. There are special Thursday hours 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM through the remainder of August and the first two weeks of September.
