Come on down to the river for an unforgettable evening of Jazz, Blues, R&B, Funk and More on Saturday, April 18 at 7:30 PM with TWO bands who each have sold out Lincoln Hall – CATRO with vocalist Tammi Dahl and Key Factor with vocalist Lori Russo performing jazz, blues, R&B, Funk, Ballads and more as ARCA celebrates the late Drew Orient, its former executive director from 2009 to 2013, an avid amateur saxophonist who founded popular jazz and Scottish Festivals.
The concert will open with Jonathan Shegog and Brian Lowry of Carnival of Souls performing “Highland Cathedral” on bagpipes and the McKissick Mighty Wurlitzer.
Longtime CATRO saxophonist Dave Kana will be riffing as he enters from the back of the hall to the stage – and Poet Philip Terman will read a poem to the improvisation of CATRO as they did in Poetry and Jazz concerts that Drew produced.
The dance floor at the back of the hall will be open as people are moved by CATRO and Key Factor’s mix of jazz, R&B classics, blues, samba, bossa nova, romantic ballads, Caribbean styles, Neo soul and Funk.
The Red Brick Gallery – which was founded by artist Donna Edmonds as a result of Drew Orient’s vision and instigation – before the April 18 concert will have a soft opening of the exhibit featuring earthen ceramics by Charlie Platt and drawings and paintings by Jason Floyd Lewis from 5 to 7 PM at 17 Main Street. With gratitude remembering Drew Orient
ARCA’s Executive Director from 2009 – 2013
In 2009, Drew Orient stepped in as the Executive Director of Allegheny RiverStone Center for the Arts after the departure of ARCA’s founding board members and executive director who left after chartering the organization, refurbishing Lincoln Hall and presenting two and a half years of concerts.
An innovative and creative impresario, Drew had a passion for music and especially jazz and in five seasons built a foundation for ARCA without which it would not exist today.
Drew created Beethoven and jazz festivals and poetry & jazz concerts and fulfilled Dr. Arthur’s Steffee vision of a Scottish Festival at RiverStone Estate that attracted thousands over five years. Drew’s own vision of establishing an art gallery in the original Fox family’s brick office building led him to inspire former Westinghouse Sr. Executive Vice President Donna Edmonds, also a botanical watercolorist, to found the Red Brick Gallery with its cooperative artist structure.
ARCA is deeply grateful for his creativity and generosity while receiving a miniscule salary, more a volunteer than employee, that exemplified his love of music and art as well as his passion to bring inspiring concerts and exhibits to impact the lives of residents of western Pennsylvania. Drew continued this after he moved to Harmony, PA.
